Dragon Dictate is the recommended voice recognition software for use
within the Trust. This software allows you to dictate to your PC rather than
typing and allows you to open other applications using only your voice.
Some users may have difficulty using the keyboard to type
for a variety of reasons. Dragon can remove the need for the keyboard and so
greatly improve the speed and/or accuracy when entering text into documents or
other systems. Dragon can be used in all of the Microsoft applications such as
Word, Excel etc; and also in clinical systems such as Rio.
While some IT equipment such as iPads include the ability to
dictate text, Dragon is a much more powerful and accurate tool as it is a
dedicated piece of software to support dictation. Dragon learns from you the
more you use it, greatly improving its accuracy over time.
Before Dragon can be used, a license for the software needs
to be purchased by your service or department. In addition to the license, it
is recommended that a Dragon handset (used to capture your voice) is also
purchased. While Dragon can be used with a normal USB headset – the accuracy of
dictation will be reduced. The software will need to be installed and activated
by IT before it can be used. Dragon is usually installed on an users work
laptop.
